ENGIE Accelerates South Africa’s Energy Transition
ENGIE, a platinum member of the French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FSACCI), is making significant progress in advancing South Africa’s renewable energy landscape. The construction of the Graspan and Grootspruit solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants marks a key step in the country’s transition to clean energy.
ENGIE has made exceptional strides in the development of the 75 MW Graspan Solar PV plant in the Northern Cape. The project has already seen the installation of 105 000 solar modules and the laying of over 744,000 meters of cable. Once operational, Graspan will contribute substantial renewable energy to the national grid, supporting South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).
Construction of the Grootspruit plant in the Free State began in July 2024. The project has already installed 155 000 solar modules and all cables have been laid in the ground. Like Graspan, it will generate 75 MW of power, providing clean electricity for approximately 80,000 households while reducing CO2 emissions by 100,000 tons annually.
Both projects, developed in partnership with Pele Green Energy, are scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. ENGIE remains committed to South Africa’s energy transition, reinforcing its role as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.
